These are used, depending on the element of the particular trigram or hexagram.

I Ching is an ancient Chinese nature-based philosophy that consults the oracle using yarrow stalks or (Chinese) coins. The person employing I Ching asks a question about something such as a personal, business or family decision, and throws the coins six times to form a hexagram. Two combined trigrams consisting of broken (yin) and unbroken (yang) lines give a hexagram of which there is a total of 64 possible combinations.

There is something very meditative and peaceful about the various forms which have numerous symbolic meanings. There is an inexplicable resonance -- conscious or not -- on the part of the viewer when seeing these simple geometric forms, says White. She adds, Rendering my interpretations of some of the trigrams and hexagrams has deepened my appreciation of Eastern art forms and Eastern philosophy& and has lead me into the realm of the Chinese written character, as well. In addition, it is considered auspicious and good Feng Shui to display certain depictions of such things as fish, flowers, water, Chinese characters, etc., in appropriate locations to move the energy in an environment.

White s art as well as her color and design consultations incorporate I Ching & Feng Shui principles. These are at work in much of what White originally created in the environment of the Charlie White Gallery in downtown Portland in 2000-2002. White utilizes such principles by first, developing an environment, then by creating the art (site-specific) suitable to the environment for numerous corporate and private applications throughout the greater Portland area, Salem, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii.

Currently White s work is viewable in numerous public places (please see Corporate Placements ): Rental Sales Gallery (Portland Art Museum); Dragonfish Restaurant in the Paramount Hotel, the Melvin Mark Properties Corporate Headquarters in the lobby in Columbia Square on SW First Ave, and Madison s on Fifth -- a restaurant in the PacWest building across from City Hall in Portland, to name a few. She has art viewable to the public in Salem, OR, and Seattle, WA. White s color sense, in combination with her artistic capabilities and aesthetic, is extremely popular and widely applicable.

© Charlie White Studio 2006
